The black star (★) and white star (☆) are text characters used for ratings (★★★★☆), highlights and decoration. Unlike the ⭐ emoji, they take the color and size of the text around them.
For star ratings, combine filled and empty stars: ★★★☆☆. ✦ and ✧ are four-pointed sparkles popular in bios and headings; ✨ is the emoji version. ⋆ is a small star used in math and as a decorative separator.

How to type ★ on Mac, Windows and phone
There is no keystroke for ★ on the US Mac layout. Press ⌃ Control + ⌘ Command + Space to open the Character Viewer, search “black star” and double-click it. No keystroke on the US layout.
